The pension system can be divided into three different groups:
1. Employee’s Pension Insurance
2. Pension for Workers in Special Occupations
3. National Pension
Employee’s Pension Insurance is handled by your employer and the Social Insurance Office, whereas the Pension for Workers in Special Occupations is handled by the Mutual Aid Association (membership of the association is a requirement). You are eligible to receive a pension after a fulfillment of the twenty five year membership period.
However, depending on your date of birth, those born after 1 April 1956, and who have fulfilled a membership period of between twenty and twenty four years may be eligible for a special provision of the basic aged pension.
The national pension plan is open to those between the ages of 20 and 60 years living in Japan, who are not covered by those pensions outlined in 1. and 2. above. You may enrol by presenting your foreign resident registration card and filling out an application form at the National Pension Division of City Hall. Benefits can be received after fulfilling a 25 year membership.
Note: Recently the system has changed a little for foreigners. If you have worked in Japan for a period of six months or more and are permanently leaving Japan, you can get a partial refund. |
