The purchase of housing in Japan is relatively expensive, and most foreigners choose to rent accommodation, usually a flat or apartment. However, houses for sale can be found through the newspaper, real estate agents (fudosan gyosha), or by asking friends or colleagues for help.
In Japan, housing is classified according to the number and type of rooms.
For example : 3LDK
1. The 3L refers to the number of rooms other than the dining room and kitchen.
2. The D stands for dining room and K is for kitchen.
3. The size of the room is usually expressed by the number of tatami mats. For example 4.5 mats. One tatami mat measures about 1.8m x 0.9m.
4. Non-tatami rooms are measured in tsubo. One tsubo equals about 3.3 square metres.
