CITY BUSSES As of August 2004, there are currently five city bus companies in Kagoshima City : Shiei (City Managed Buses), JR, Kagoshima Kotsu, Hayashida, and Nangoku. Once you have figured out the bus system, transportation is very convenient. Not all buses have numbers, rather, the route is written on the front and side of the bus. Each stop is announced as the bus approaches it. IN THE BUS 1. Check that you are getting on the right bus, by either checking on the panel by the front door or asking someone. 2. After getting on the bus (through the central door), you will see either side of you are automatic ticket dispensers. Take a ticket, which has the number of the stop where you got on printed on it. 3. When your stop is announced, ring the bell. 4. Go to the front of the bus and work out your fare by matching the number on your ticket to the number on the board at the front of the bus. You drop your ticket and exact money (or coupon ticket) in the box by the driver. If you don't have the exact money, you can change money in the automatic change machine. Put your coins in the slot and change will come out. The machines accept 100 yen, 500 yen coins and 1000 yen notes. The driver may be able to change larger denominations. COUPON TICKETS Coupon tickets (kaisuken) can be bought from the driver, department stores or at bus centres. There are two lines in operation, the Korimoto line and the Taniyama line. Line one, which has a blue sign, runs from Kagoshima Station to Taniyama. Line two, or the red line, runs from Kagoshima Station via Kagoshima Chuo Station to Korimoto. FARES There is a flat rate of 160 yen, no matter how long or how far you ride on the one tram. You may purchase a one day unlimited pass for 600 yen, which you can also use for the City View bus and all city run buses. You can buy coupon tickets for the trams that can also be used for city run buses. There are also monthly and quarterly tram passes, which work out to be economical if you intend to use the tram regularly. You pay as you leave the tram. You can get change from the change making machine, near the driver at the front of the tram. Note: The trams start at 6:00am and stop running relatively early at 10:30pm. As of December 2000, the basic fare is 560 yen, with the fares rising 20% between the hours of 10:00pm and 5:00am. Please be aware that most taxi drivers do not speak English, so it is advisable to have your destination written down in Japanese if you do not speak much Japanese. HOW TO HAIL A TAXI There are three ways to hail a taxi in Japan: 1. You can raise your hand and flag the taxi down as it approaches. 2. You can telephone the taxi company and have the taxi come and pick you up. 3. You can go to a marked taxi stand and stand in line. Note: Any taxi with the red characters 空車 (Kusha) appearing on the left hand side of the wind screen is vacant. A green light or green sign means that the car is occupied. Please note the door will open and close automatically, so be careful when getting in or out of a taxi. Tipping is not customary in Japan. FERRIES There are two types of ferry- the regular ferry, and the Toppy Jet Foil, which is a faster version. There are several different companies leaving from Kagoshima for various destinations. Sakurajima ferries run every ten minutes between 7:40-12:30 and 15:10-19:30, every fifteen minutes between 6:30-7:30, 12:45-15:00 and 17:45-20:30, every half an hour between 20:30-22:00, and on the hour between 22:30-6:30.
