HOSPITALS Medical treatment is available at both public hospitals and private clinics. Consultations are on a first come first served basis, but there are exceptions, so please check with your clinic before arrival. Consultation hours are generally from 9時00分am to 12時00分pm and 2時00分pm to 5時00分pm, Monday to Saturday, but vary between hospitals. Medical care is very expensive in Japan, so please make sure you arrange health insurance coverage as soon as possible. GOING TO THE DOCTOR 1. Fill out the application form. The form is only in Japanese, so it might be a good idea to bring someone who can read Japanese with you. 2. Give the application form and your health insurance card to the receptionist. If you forget your card, you will probably have to pay the entire consultation fee and the cost of the medication at the end of your visit. You will have a chart made up for you. 3. You will then be directed to the waiting room, usually a hallway, where you wait until your name is called. While you are waiting, you may be required to fill out a questionnaire or a medical history sheet. When your name is called, you will be accompanied to the examination room. 4. Consultation. (The consulting room may be a curtained-off cubicle, rather than in a separate room). 5. After having seen the doctor, go to the cashier to pay for the visit. 6. If you have received a prescription, go to the dispensary, give over your prescription and wait for your name or number to be called. Don't hesitate to ask questions. The Japanese doctors may not be used to being asked questions, but it is your body and health, so it is your right to ask questions if you want to. Note: This whole procedure may take two or three hours, especially if it is your first visit. OUT OF HOURS TREATMENT 1.
