Health Insurance 健康保険

There are a total of eight health insurance systems in Japan. They can then be divided into two categories.
1. Employees’ Health Insurance
Union Managed Health Insurance
Government Managed Health Insurance
Seaman’s Insurance
National Public Workers Mutual Aid Association Insurance
Local Public Workers Mutual Aid Association Insurance
Private School Teachers’ and Employees’ Mutual Aid Association Insurance
2. National Health Insurance which works in conjunction with the national pension system.

National Health Insurance Union
The National Health Insurance System is set up to provide benefits for those who have fallen ill or been involved in an accident, provided that insurance fees have been paid.
For those living within Kagoshima City who are not registered in an Employees’ Health Insurance Plan or a private life insurance plan, National Health Insurance is compulsory.

ENROLLMENT
If you fall in to category one, your employer will provide the appropriate enrollment form and deduct the monthly payments. If you do not fall into this category, you can apply for the National Health Insurance at the National Insurance Division of City Hall.
Regardless of which system you are registered with, you will receive a health insurance card, which you must present at the reception desk of the health clinic you attend in order to receive benefits.
BENEFITS
Category one covers 80% of the medical costs for the principal member, whether treated as an out patient or hospitalized. If other family members are hospitalized, 80% of the medical costs are covered and 70% if treated as an out patient. The National Health Insurance system covers members and their dependents for 70%.
