Sakamoto Ryoma's Honeymoon
About 130 years ago, Sakamoto Ryoma, one of the great heroes of The Meiji Restoration, and his wife O-ryo were invited by Saigo Takamori to visit Kagoshima. This was the first Japanese Honeymoon. Ryoma had an enjoyable and curative tour of Satsuma during the chaotic period before The Meiji Restoration.We can easily imagine how the happy couple toured the spas, went shooting and fishing, climbed Mt. Takachiho and visited other parts of Kagoshima. Ryoma told his wife, "Next time, once we have restored The Imperial Rule, we shall sail around the whole of Japan". Although his dream never came true, at least he enjoyed a peaceful three-month tour of Kagoshima during his 33 years life. |
