Description of facility

This library presents various kinds of information including books and audio and visual materials, supporting lifelong learning. There are books and picture books written in foreign languages available. This library also contains spaces for self-study, a corner for children and babies and room for local cultural materials.

Library in the Community Center

Description of facility

Every Community Center has a library. Using a library user card, you can reserve, borrow and return books in the Municipal Library and the libraries in Community Centers.

This cannot be used at Central or Kamoike Community Centers

Description of facility

The library has a learning hall, which is for self-learning, as well as corners for general books and children's books.

Art Museum and Gallery

Description of facility

The Municipal Art Museum is a beautiful building like an art work. The museum exhibits works of famous artists born in Kagoshima, including Seiki Kuroda, and also works of Western artists, including Picasso. It stores books about arts. It also has places for painting pictures and seminars.

Description of facility

The museum exhibits buried cultural properties including plants, animals and minerals in Kagoshima. Visitors can learn the history of Sakurajima, typhoons and natural monuments.

Reimei-kan

Description of facility

Reimei-kan is Kagoshima prefecture`s centre for historical records. Visitors can learn about the histories, climates and customs of Kagoshima Prefecture. Reimei-kan was built on the grounds that Tsurumaru Castle was once located. The building, designed by architect Yoshiro Taniguchi, also resembles that of the original Tsurumaru castle.

Saigo Nanshu Memorial Hall

Description of facility

Saigo Nanshu Memorial Hall has a large number of materials for Takamori Saigo. It collected materials for Takamori Saigo from everywhere in Japan. This facility is set up so that children and youngsters in Kagoshima and sightseers will see the materials. It has books about Takamori Saigo and Seinan War. Visitors can watch videos about Takamori Saigo.

Description of facility

Kagoshima Modern Literature Museum

Visitors can appreciate works of novelists involved with Kagoshima. Visitors can see manuscripts and cherished things of novelists relating to Kagoshima, such as Muku Hatoju.

Kagoshima Merchen Museum

There is an amazing clock in the yard. The museum is a place that give a large number of fantasies to visitors and exhibits amusing articles. Visitors can feel like heroes in fantastic stories.

Description of facility

The museum, located near Kotsuki River, allows visitors learn about the Meiji Restoration. It exhibits articles with sounds and lights and mechanical articles. Visitors can also learn people who established the modern Japan, such as Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi.

Description of facility

The museum exhibits articles for ancient remains, easy to learn. It exhibits articles using miniature models and tablets, which is rare in Japan. Visitors can watch, touch and enjoy them.

Former Kagoshima Foreign Engineer's Residence (Ijin-kan)

Description of facility

Ijin-kan is a valuable historical building that was built in 1867 as a lodging to accommodate seven British engineers, who supervised operations in the early stages of the Kagoshima Spinning Factory.
It is registered as a World Heritage Site and is considered an important national cultural property.

Municipal Science Museum

Description of facility

The Municipal Science Museum was established in December 1990 to foster scientific minds. The museum exhibits articles for nature, science, technology and outer space, such as miniature models of volcanoes and space rockets. Visitors can also enjoy planetarium shows.

Kodama Art Museum is located in a vegetation area with a stream, which is beautiful throughout the year. It has about 600 articles related to the Kodama family.

Description of facility

Mr. Kodama, deeply impressed with pictures by Kinosuke Ebihara, established this museum. It stores a large number of art works that have been collected for a long period. Visitors can also appreciate wonderful pictures of painters related to Kagoshima.

Description of facility

The museum, located on a hill, exhibits about 1,000 art works of painters of Japan and other countries. From the hill-top museum, you see the city of Kagoshima. The view from the museum is extremely beautiful.

Concert Hall

Description of facility

The halls has a major hall with 2,000 seats, an middle-size hall with 1,000 seats, and a small hall with 400 seats. The halls have a wonderful acoustical effect. It is used by musicians and residents for various events. You can see Sakurajima and Kinko Bay directly from here.

Tamazatotei-teien is a garden that was built in 1835 by the 27th feudal lord of the Shimazu clan. It is one of Japan's places of scenic beauty.

Sengan-en Kitei-en Shoko-shusei-kan

Description of facility

Sengan-en was a villa for the lord of Shimazu, having a beautiful garden. It is a garden with a house of shoin-zukuri, commanding Sakurajima and Kinkowan. Shoko-shusei-kan allows visitors to learn the Meiji Restoration.

Zoological Parks and Aquariums

Description of facility

This popular, natural zoological park is the only place in Kyushu where you can meet koalas. Hirakawa Zoological park keeps approximately 130 species and 1000 animals. One attraction is the area where giraffes walk leisurely with Sakurajima in the background.

Description of facility

Kagoshima City Aquarium displays 500 species and 30,000 living creatures around the theme of Kagoshima's ocean. The highlight of the aquarium is the large Kuroshio tank where the world's largest fish, the whale shark, as well as skipjack tuna, and rays swim together.

There are also exciting events such as "Dolphin Time", electric eel feeding demonstrations, and guided tours held every day.

Description of facility

Muku Hatoju Literature Memorial Hall

Description of facility

Muku Hatoju was the first novelist who wrote stories on the theme of animals. It was Kajiki-cho that he began to write his animal stories. This memorial hall was established in Kajiki-cho, where he live twenty years, in 1990.

Description of facility

The facility has extensive gardens commanding the beautiful mountain of Hahagatake, located on its foot. This place is so beautiful that it was called a Kyoto in Satsuma in old days. The place is designated as a preservation area for important traditional buildings. The seven gardens are designated as a national beauty spot.

Chiran Tokko Peace Center

Description of facility

A Tokko operation was performed during the Okinawa Campaign in the Pacific War. Tokko army pilots operating airplanes with bombs dashed themselves against enemy vessels. This center exhibits materials of those army pilots.
