How To Separate Rubbish & Recyclables

Segregation and Collection

There are 3 primary rules:

  1. Put out your rubbish by 8am on the collection day (there are different days for different types of rubbish).
  2. Put out your rubbish at the designated collection spots.
  3. Segregate, put into transparent plastic bags, and seal (for papers, tie into a bundle with string).

Food scraps, cooking oil drained into cloth or paper, paper, tissues, scrap material, cloths, leaves, tree branches, disposable nappies, soft toys, etc. Plastic items: cassette tapes, plastic basins, toys, etc. Leather items: shoes, bags, etc. Rubber items: rubber hose pipes, etc.

Items not collected by Kagoshima City

Kagoshima City is unable to dispose of the following items. Please contact the place of purchase, or a specialised rubbish disposal company for collection.
TVs, air-conditioners, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, computers marked ‘recyclable’, pianos, iron poles (longer than 2 metres), large water heaters, agricultural equipment,bricks, sand, soil, tyres, fire extinguishers, car batteries, concrete slabs, tiles, gas cylinders, waste oil, kerosene, paint, explosives, pesticides, etc.

  • Please place in a clear plastic bag
  • Drain water from food scraps.
  • Cut branches into lengths of 50cm or less.
  • Remove soiling from disposable nappies.
  • Drain used cooking oil into cloth or paper.

Non-Burnable
Rubbish

  • Please place in a clear plastic bag
  • Sharp objects such as glass or knives should be wrapped in thick paper and marked as dangerous items .
  • Cinders should be wet to make sure they are extinguished before disposing.

  • Please tie into bundles by type
  • Do not place rubbish in paper bags or bind with tape
  • Waxed or oil lined cardboard should be disposed of as burnable rubbish.
  • Any plastic from tissue boxes and any leather or plastic covering on magazines should be disposed of as burnable rubbish.
  • Metal serrated strips from plastic wrap/aluminum foil boxes should be disposed of as non-burnable rubbish .
  • Paper cartons : Please wash,open and dry paper cartons, then tie them with string and take them out.

Clothing

  • Please place in a clear plastic bag.
  • Futon mattresses and carpets should be disposed of as large articles of rubbish. Please contact us for more details.

Cans, jars &
plastic bottles

  • Please place in a clear plastic bag

Place cans and bottles in one clear plastic bag, and plastic bottles in another before disposing.

  • Do not flatten before disposing
  • Remove corks or lids from bottles. Plastic lids should be disposed of with plastic containers. Metal caps should be disposed of as non-burnable rubbish.
  • Empty contents and rinse before disposing.

Plastic

The following must be disposed of as burnable rubbish.

  • Plastic products other than containers and bags (toys, toothbrush, cassete tapes, buckets, plastic basins, flower pots, etc)
  • Plastic containers or bags soiled with oil or remaining food products (e.g. mayonnaise bottles, cooking oil bottles)

  • Please place in a clear plastic bag
  • Please separate lightbulbs, fluorescent lights, batteries and spray cans into four separate bags before disposal.
  • We cannnot collect button batteries, cell-phone batteries or rechargeable batteries. Please consult an electrical store for disposal of these.
  • Spray cans and gas cylinders must be used up completely before disposing.

Large articles
of rubbish

You must apply in advance by telephone in order to dispose of these items.

  • Please purchase a coupon with the value of the specified fee, paste it on the item, and place it out on the specified day.
  • Remove all fuel or oil from scooters/heaters before disposal.
