Measures For Volcanic Ash From Sakurajima

When there is increased volcanic activity on Sakurajima causing ash to fall heavily, you should endeavor to do the following.

  • When heavy ash is falling, try to refrain from going outdoors.
  • If you do go outside when heavy ash is falling, wear a hat, mask and long-sleeved clothes, and use an umbrella, etc.
  • When you get back from being outside, gargle and rinse your mouth out.
  • Wash off any ash that is on your face, hands or other exposed areas.
  • When ash is falling, take care not to get it in your eyes. If you do get ash in your eyes, do not rub them. Wash them out using clean water.
If you cannot get the ash out of your eyes, consult a specialist doctor (ophthalmologist).

Health counseling on falling ash and gases is available every month free of charge at your local health center.
